Gia Binh Airport was approved by the National Assembly with a total investment of nearly VND 200 trillion, a capacity of 30–50 million passengers annually, aiming for a 5-star international standard and planned to serve the APEC Summit 2027.

According to information from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) under the Ministry of Transport, the planning project for Gia Binh Airport, located in tỉnh bắc ninh, việt nam, is currently under review. This airport is being considered to take on the role of performing official ceremonial duties for the reception and send-off of State-level leaders and guests.

This proposal is put forth as a means to relieve the heavy workload currently borne by Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi), which manages both high commercial flight traffic and diplomatic reception activities. The CAAV believes that separating these functions will optimize the operations of both facilities.

The Defined Role of Gia Binh Airport

Gia Binh Airport, which primarily functions as a military airfield, is now being strategically repurposed to handle the following missions:

  • Primary Function: To execute formal reception and farewell ceremonies for high-level international guests, in strict adherence to State protocol regulations.
  • Secondary Function: To serve operations for charter airlines and other specific aviation activities, such as cargo transport and specialized aviation services.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam specifically emphasizes the necessity of developing a dedicated airport. This facility must be fully equipped with the required infrastructure and meet all aviation security standards to guarantee the utmost dignity and absolute safety for all state-level reception activities.

Alleviating Congestion at Noi Bai Airport

Currently, every time a Head of State reception takes place at Noi Bai Airport, commercial airlines often have to adjust their flight schedules, sometimes even resulting in cancellations. This causes significant disruption to civil aviation operations.

The move to transfer these ceremonial activities to Gia Binh Airport is expected to:

  • Stabilize the commercial flight schedule at Noi Bai.
  • Minimize delays and interruptions in passenger transportation.
  • Ensure the continuity and efficiency of the North's gateway international airport.
