Vietnam leads Southeast Asia in digital economy growth for 3 consecutive years

With the highest growth rate in Southeast Asia for 3 consecutive years, Vietnam is digital economy is becoming an important driving force for the national economy.

At the 10th meeting summarizing the operations of the Committee and Project 06, chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, The Ministry of Information and Communications (now merged into the Ministry of Science and Technology) announced that Vietnam has risen to 71st out of 193 countries in the United Nations e-Government Survey rankings (announced in September 2024), an increase of 15 places compared to 2022.

Vietnam's digital economy growth rate has reached the highest in the region for 3 consecutive years. Specifically, Vietnam's digital economy growth rate reached 28% in 2022, 19% in 2023, and over 20% in 2024.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has identified the theme for digital transformation in 2025 as "Comprehensive digital transformation to develop the digital economy, creating new impetus for economic growth", aiming for an economic growth of 8-10% per year.

Joining hands with the Government in its efforts to act and achieve the aforementioned goal, Digital technology enterprises are not only important factors but also play a leading role in guiding the digitalization process across all sectors. With the strong development of digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cloud computing, and Make in Vietnam technology, digital technology enterprises are becoming the core foundation helping Vietnam to breakthrough in the digital age.

In 2024, the revenue of Vietnam's digital technology industry reached nearly US$158 billion, an increase of over 10% compared to 2023. This figure not only reflects the boom of the digital technology industry but also affirms the key role of technology enterprises in the economy.
With a strong growth rate, digital technology enterprises are becoming the leading force in the digital transformation process, promoting digital economy development and enhancing Vietnam's competitiveness on the international stage.

In addition to mastering domestic technology, Vietnamese digital technology enterprises are gradually expanding international cooperation, connecting with major technology corporations worldwide to access advanced technology.  Attracting high-tech research and manufacturing organizations to Vietnam not only helps enhance the level of technology but also creates opportunities for Vietnam to engage more deeply in the global value chain.

For example, the event of Viettel Digital signing a business cooperation agreement with Visa is expected to contribute to strongly promoting digital financial transformation and expanding digital payment infrastructure in Vietnam

Through this agreement, users will benefit from modern cashless payment methods such as Viettel – Visa co-branded cards, contactless payments, card tokenization, along with a real-time money transfer system directly connecting Viettel Money and the global Visa network. At the same time, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will also have more opportunities to access flexible credit, helping to increase competitiveness and sustainable development.

In particular, this agreement also contributes to implementing the national digital transformation strategy, promoting cashless payments, and enhancing digital financial experiences in Vietnam.

With a solid foundation in technology infrastructure and the strong transformation of digital enterprises, Vietnam's digital economy is on a strong growth trajectory. The next strategies and policies to promote comprehensive digital transformation will create a dynamic and sustainable digital economy, making a significant contribution to achieving national economic development goals in the coming years.
